News: Iskarnival Eko 2019 Highlights Eco-Consciousness Of Creative Communities In Johor

Nov 27, 2019

Iskarnival returns to celebrate the second year of Iskandar Puteri as a city – bigger, brighter and greener on 30 November and 1 December at Puteri Harbour.

To honour planet Earth and to commemorate Iskandar Puteri’s aspiration of becoming a green city, master developer UEM Sunrise has lined-up a feast of live performances, outdoor activities, workshops, visual arts, bazaars and street circus acts.

In its 8th year now, Iskarnival Eko is Iskandar Puteri’s platform for local initiatives and talents to showcase and share ideas on working, playing and living green – curated to initiate social change and reduce environmental impact.

This free public festival aims to draw audiences to strengthen appreciation for the natural resources in an urban context. From new trends in the Malaysian culture to visions of a better future, the festival’s program highlights the works of local artists and artisans as they get together to promote Iskandar Puteri with their spirit and fervour in making a difference to protect our environmental ecosystem from rapid deterioration.

UEM Sunrise Berhad Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib said: “Iskarnival Eko reflects the vibrancy and highlights the creative communities in Johor as well as beyond, providing a platform for them to showcase their talent and products to an eco-conscious township.”

“As a responsible property developer; we design living, working and recreational environments to be conducive and also improving social conditions whilst taking initiatives to conserve natural resources and protect the environment,” he added.

“Around 100,000 visitors are expected to make their way to Puteri Harbour on both days for Iskarnival Eko whereby we hope to influence these communities and the public to become eco-conscious and more alert of our environment,” Anwar said.

In line with the eco theme, Indonesian visual artist and sculptor Andi Ramdani will repurpose a large-scale interactive bamboo installation that is inspired by the Malay Archipelago called Kubah from another festival in Kuala Lumpur.

Several sculptures made from recycled car parts will be placed along the harbour front and feature endangered animal species such as the tapir, hornbill and seahorses to highlight the fragile environment.

This year’s highlights include an additional venue at Puteri Harbour – the Sandy Beach –featuring Slide the City, a giant and thrilling inflatable slide. The water used for the event is recycled through a large filtering system that will allow people to enjoy the ride throughout the event without using excessive amounts of water.

Open from 10 am to 6 pm on both days, Slide the City goers must be properly attired with track bottoms, shorts and t-shirt. All participants must also be seven years old and above or at least 110cm tall. Those below the age of 12 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver.

There is also an Electronic Dance Music (EDM) concert featuring both local and international DJs at the Sandy Beach area after 6 pm till late on 30 November only.

Among those making an appearance is rising South Korean female star, DJ Jina. Besides DJing, she is already well known to people as an outstanding model. She has appeared in various venues and magazines as a model for “Maxim Korea”, “FHM Philippines” and “ONE FC MMA”.

She will be accompanied by Indonesia’s DJ Derina Derin who is a familiar name among nightlife lovers in Bandung. They will be joined by Malaysia‘s DJ Amber Na and DJ Lissa Qash.

Iskarnival Eko 2019’s other highlight is the RTM Big Gig Concert that will feature Akim & The Majistret, Ella, Ramli Sarip, Zainal Abidin, Man Kidal, Hillary Ang, Jeffrydin, K-Clique and Gerhana Ska Cinta on 30 November.

For the second day on 1 December, RTM’s Bintang Pujaan 10 concert will feature singers like Zamani, Siti Noordiana, Shiha, Wany Hasrita and Syafiq Farhan.

This year’s cultural and street performances include Rainforest World Music Festival performance from Sarawak At Adau, Dikir Barat, Drum Funk, Nyoba Kan & Souls Impact Percussion, Rithaudin Dance, International Street Circus and Viva Circus.

There will also be an Eko Bazaar, Eko Film Screenings and Eko Conscious Market to encourage the reuse of items and entrepreneurship. These bazaars will be selling arts and crafts, vintage items, accessories and collectibles that are mostly locally sourced by Johorean entrepreneurs.

In conjunction with Iskarnival Eko, there will be the biggest tree plant giveaway ever held. Swing by for some free plants to decorate your home with. To supplement the tree giveaway there will be various workshops hosted by NGOs to assist with recycling and green living practices.

Visitors will also be treated to a magical display of Musical Fireworks at 11 pm on both nights
